Calcium is needed by our body to have strong bones and teeth. Calcium supplements sold in stores, according to the original article, is not always in its purest form. These calcium supplements are mixed with stabilizers. The ionized calcium form is a result of the reaction of the calcium supplement to the digestive acids and other minerals. Compared to the whole calcium supplement, only a fraction of the calcium tablet becomes ionized.

In the said article, seventeen calcium supplements were compared and tested for their pH, oxidation-reduction-potential capabilities, the electrical conductivity, and their ability to counteract the rouleauing effect on erythrocytes (which will vary depending on the degree of acidity within the blood serum).

The seventeen commonly prescribed over-the-counter calcium supplements that were tested were Mylanta, Citracal, Rolaids, Maalox, Calcet, Tums,  Natural, Bone Meal, Oscal, AdvaCal, Source Natural Coral, Coral Complex2, CORALadvantage, Nature’s Sunshine Coral Calcium, Coral Sea, HTN’s Alka-Line™ Coral Calcium Capsules and HTN’s Alka-Line™ Coral Calcium. The tests were done by an independent laboratory.

Each calcium product were crushed and mixed with steam distilled water. A standardized digital pH meter was used to measure each sample’s pH.

Oxygen-reduction potential readings were made by using a standard oxygen-reduction potential meter. This test measures the  bioavailability and bioabsorbability of each product. The more negative the results, the more ions are available for body metabolic functions, according to the original article.

An OHM meter measures the electrical conductivity in ohms. This would indicate the amount of electrical resistance the product has. A lower ohm reading is essential because it would mean it will be easier for impulses to be conducted between the body fluids and tissues.

Phase contrast darkfield light microscopes were used to screen the live blood cell. Live blood cell screening using this type of darkfield light microscope could show the amount of acid (acidity) that is present in the blood. The level of acidity is directly proportional to the erythrocyte roleau or low oxygen carrying ability because of the red blood cells being clumped together. When the subjects’ blood samples were viewed under phase contrast darkfield light microscopes, they initially showed no releau making the blood samples alkaline in nature. The test subjects were then given a cola product to slightly acidify their blood. After giving the cola, the test subjects were randomly given product samples to determine if their blood serum will be brought back to its alkaline state. The comparison tests were repeatedly given over a five day period.

The results of the test show a wide range of variability in the product samples. The article has concluded that the type, bioavailability and bioabsorbability of the calcium taken by the test subjects affect the results.

It was also stated in the original article that only 5-10% of the original elemental calcium being taken develops into its ionized form. Only the ionized calcium form becomes bioavailable to the human body.

The article stresses the importance of calcium in our body. Milk and milk products are more easily absorbed by the body compared to other calcium products. In order to raise the blood and the cell’s pH level, ionic calcium supplementation is needed to result in an most favorable health level. According to the test results in the original article, HTN’s Originial Patented™ Sango Alka-Line™ Coral Calcium products was the best source of ionic calcium.
